As a dentist, I am highly trained and familiar with the anatomy and physiology of the head and neck as the oral, peri-oral, and facial regions are where I work every day! I am a member of the American Academy of Facial Esthetics and as a dentist I am uniquely positioned to provide anti-wrinkle treatment for patients who are looking to soften and refresh their look.
The most common anti-wrinkle injection are made up a neuroprotein released by the bacterium strain Clostridium botulinum. A purified version of the protein has been used in the medical field for decades and it is widely known for its cosmetic effects. The mechanism of action of this protein is quite simple, when injected near muscles it inhibits the transmitters involved in creating muscle contraction.
There is no loss of feeling or sensation, just a decrease in muscle activity. These injections work on dynamic muscles, muscles that when in motion crease the skin to create wrinkles. If these muscles receive an injection, the movement that creates wrinkles will cease leading to the skin smoothing effects that is most desired. The areas most commonly treated are the facial wrinkles of the forehead, between the eyebrows (commonly known as “the 11s”), and the area around the eyes (crow’s feet).
The effects of treatment can last anywhere from 3 to 6 months depending on the individual. Sometimes enhancements are needed a few weeks after the initial delivery in order to achieve the patients desired effect. Overall, these injections are a minimally invasive procedure with the potential for highly desirable effects.
