Your initial appointment at High Point Dentistry will take 90 minutes and is designed to give you an overview of our practice and provide us with information which will help us meet your dental needs. Periodontal therapy (teeth cleaning) is not part of this appointment due to the variance in patients' needs. Periodontal therapy will be part of a subsequent appointment.
During your first appointment at High Point Dentistry, you will meet our staff and take a tour of our office. Any necessary paperwork will be completed. (You can download new patient forms in advance from this website.) Dr. Jelacic will meet with you to review your medical and dental history and determine which x-rays are needed to complete a comprehensive examination. If you have x-rays from your previous dentist, you are asked to bring them to this appointment. Bring any insurance information to this initial appointment as well, so our office can determine your insurance benefits.
Following x-rays, Dr. Jelacic will complete a comprehensive exam to provide a thorough diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment plan. The examination will include:
Oral Cancer Screening: If you are a smoker or smokeless tobacco user, you are in primary danger of developing oral cancer. More than 8,000 deaths were attributed to oral cancer in the past year. We are committed to the prevention of oral cancer through the early identification of pre-cancerous conditions, and provide oral cancer screenings at each preventive care appointment.
Periodontal Examination: Periodontal (gum) disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in the United States. Dr. Jelacic will examine your gum tissues to insure that gum disease is detected and treated in its early stages.
Occlusal Examination: The force of your bite can sometimes affect the positioning of your jaw and teeth. Through minor polishing of the enamel surfaces and smoothing fillings of the teeth, Dr. Jelacic can help redistribute and redirect the biting forces. Adjustments to chewing surfaces can often eliminate headaches that occur as a result of irregular biting patterns.
Caries Exam: During this examination, Dr. Jelacic will locate areas of decay on chewing surfaces and between the teeth. Dr. Jelacic uses both a visual exam and radiographic (xray) diagnosis to determine the most conservative treatment plan for your oral needs.
Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) Dysfunction Examination: Thousands of people suffer from pain caused by disorders of this joint as well as overly stimulated muscles. Frequent indicators of this dysfunction include popping and clicking of the jaw, limited jaw opening, pain in the neck, shoulders, and upper back, and pain and pressure in the face and ears. We provide conservative therapies that can help eliminate this painful and frustrating problem.
The exam will be followed by an explanation of our findings and discussion of your treatment options. We will review insurance coverage and schedule necessary appointments at this time.
